I have had many questions regarding the modifications made to Prometheus. I thought I would put this page in to give more detail about what has been done. Prometheus is a work in progress. We are continually upgrading to improve performance and reduce weight. The basically stock Pitts S-2S was completely disassembled in 2002 and the restoration and modification began.
Fuselage
The wing attach points and upper longerons were strengthened by Ray Williams and Eddie Wilbanks. These modifications were to repair areas of weakness known to surface when the airframe is pushed to hard. We had already seen signs of this weakness in the form of elongated lower wing attach point holes. The lower longerons were previously strengthened for the addition of spring aluminum landing gear. We also welded formers and fabricated sheet metal panels forward of the cockpit similar to the S-2B & C to make access for inspections and maintenance easier. Stronger fuel tanks and an enlarged Elevator were fabricated by Raven Aircraft. The original tanks were prone to "oil can" under high G’s. We had to remove and repair them several times to repair cracks. We added an S-2C style windshield to improve aerodynamics. York Enterprises fabricated carbon-fiber gear fairings. All the engine instruments were replaced with a Grand Rapids Technologies Engine Information System.
Wings
Bill Scheunemann designed the new wings. Upgrades include fir spars, ply spar doublers, plywood leading edges, "Super Stinker" style ailerons (with a six-foot span and thirteen-inch cord), and square tips. York Enterprises fabricated a carbon-fiber cabane fairing.
Engine
Previous engine modifications include 10:1 pistons, Barrett cold-air induction, Sky Dynamics exhaust, ported cylinders and an AirFlow Performance fuel injection system. Output is 330hp. Propeller is the wide-cord Whirlwind 400C.
Cover and Paint
The Stits Poly Fiber covering system was used for all fabric work. Topcoat is PPG Commercial Vehicle paint. My fiancée, Christina Cantrell, designed the scheme. Shane Wickham painted the wings and Dave Robinson did fuselage painting. Team 1 Auto body and Glass donated the paint booth for the wing painting.
The Team
The Prometheus build team includes many friends and companies who have been working with me to create this special airplane. Some of the folks involved are: Christina Cantrell, CJ Kirby, Blake Prosser, Dave Robinson, Shane Wickham, Ray Williams, Eddie Wilbanks and many others. Companies involved include Scheunemann Aviation Products, Raven Aircraft, Team 1 Auto Body and Glass, Grand Rapid Technologies, York Enterprises, and Whirlwind Propellers.
Future Modifications
Prometheus is a work in progress and will be continually upgraded as money and product development allows. On the slate for the immediate future is a 400hp motor, carbon fiber Delmar Benjamin cowling, titanium F-1 Rocket landing gear, and possibly a new tail design.
If any of you would like more information just let me know. I would like to put any info on this page that is of interest.
